Mediation Services

Mediation is a way for family members to resolve their conflicts during and after a separation or divorce. Mediation is a vehicle to help family members come to agreement that balances the interest of family members. Mediators are neutral professionals. They help participants clearly define the issues in dispute, keeping open lines of communication, and promoting acceptable agreements.

Mediation is an opportunity for people to mutually come up with acceptable arrangements and further educate themselves as to what would be in the children’s best interest. Mediation is an alternative to the adversary and very expensive legal process involved in a Custody Evaluation. Mediation is voluntary and highly recommended as a step prior to a Custody Evaluation.

Mediation is most effective if it is confidential, though there can be an agreement that mediation be non-confidential. The focus of mediation is to identify the areas where there are conflicts and problems, and then work toward solutions. Mediation is not designed for parents that are having emotional problems. Mediation is designed for parents who are able to focus on the children despite the conflict and differences between the parties. Mediation is an opportunity for parents to better understand each other’s perspectives, to be responsible, and respectful of those differences and work toward a solution that will not put the children in conflict.

If the parents cannot come up with some joint resolution, Dr. Mann will make recommendations to assist them, but will not make recommendations to the Court since this is not a custody evaluation. If there continues to be a significant impasse, Dr. Mann may make recommendations for further assessments such as a Child Custody Evaluation or some other recommendations to assist the parents in coming to a solution.

Dr. Mann can be reached for further information for this service by phone or E-mail.
